YAMAHA VERTICAL AND BABY GRAND PIANOS
Yamaha invests large amounts of money in marketing programs through placement of instruments wherever they can be visible to the public.
Providing free pianos to pop artists, market influencers and institutions increase's Yamaha's name recognition but have several drawbacks.
The most obvious of which is that Yamaha pianos are built with the aim to excel in such venues where a louder, piercing and 'bright' piano is valued.
Interestingly, although Yamaha pianos are often sold as 'beginner pianos' they lack many of the qualities that are appreciated for home use.
For this reason we routinely receive Yamaha pianos as trade ins from customers who decide to upgrade to either the other known Japanese manufacturer, Kawai, or one of the many higher quality European piano makers we work with.
Another drawback is that although Yamaha pianos are relatively inexpensive to make, they cost more than they should given the large allowance the company allocates to marketing programs.

COMARISON BETWEEN YAMAHA AND KAWAI PIANOS
Yamaha pianos are often compared to Kawai pianos.
Kawai also produces pianos under the name 'Boston', which are offered for sale at Steinway stores, but we will leave this brand out and focus only on a Kawai to Yamaha comparison here.
Most importantly, of course, is to set the right model comparison. Given that both Yamaha and Kawai pianos make different series, apples to oranges comparisons is sometimes done.
The correct comparison between Kawai and Yamaha piano models should be based on instruments that are produced with the same target audience in mind, cost very close to each other at wholesale and are of similar sizes.
For grand/baby grand pianos it is as follows:
Yamaha GB1K, no direct comparison to Kawai models as it does not have a functioning third pedal sostenuto, but instead simply operates the bass dampers.
It is a 'promotional model with many missing design elements.
Yamaha GC series is compared to Kawai GL series.
Yamaha CX series compared to Kawai GX series.
Yamaha CF series pianos compared to Shigeru Kawai pianos.
A more detailed example, including size, would be:
Yamaha C1X compared to Kawai GX1.
Yamaha C2X compared to Kawai GX2.
Yamaha C3X compared to Kawai GX3.
To learn more about the difference between the models, or for the right comparison of upright piano models, please contact us or set a visit to the showroom.
Both Yamaha and Kawai are based in Hamamatsu, Japan, where they have manufacturing facilities, and both Yamaha and Kawai also have factories in Indonesia where they produce upright pianos and baby grand pianos at a somewhat lower cost.
The tallest Yamaha upright piano made in Indonesia and sold in the US is 48" in height. Kawai prefers to produce all of its larger uprights for the US piano market in Japan and so the tallest Kawai coming from the Indonesia factory is only 45" in height.
Yamaha also produces some of the pianos sold in the US at a factory in China in an effort to meet a lower price point as its commitment to expensive marketing programs makes Yamaha Pianos less competitive than Kawai when the cost of labor/manufacturing is similar.
In a nuts and bolts comparison between Yamaha and Kawai pianos there is a clear winner. Upon showroom inspection, it is easy to see that equivalent models by Kawai are better built, feature designs that are more costly to make and thus overall provide better value.
Although in our experience the majority of visitors to our showroom, where either Yamaha or Kawai pianos are prepared to perform at their best, find Kawai's tone to be preferable, its worth noting that tone is subjective and so preferences may vary.
While the same 'subjective preference' argument can be said about the action's playability, Kawai's Millennium III action is featuring advanced carbon fiber infused parts. These provide for reduces inertia and better control, allowing beginner students to develop a touch which is more sensitive, resulting in a more pleasing playing style.
Yamaha pianos are harder to control in lower volume, although the action feels nice at higher volumes. Budding players, especially young ones, tend to produce a tone that is strident when playing a Yamaha which is usually less favored in home environments.
Advanced players also seem to appreciate the subtleties of control the millennium III action provides but they may be able to better tame the harder to control Yamaha action so the tone is somewhat less harsh given similar voicing.
Its worth noting that the louder, more percussive tone makes Yamaha a good candidate when used at restaurants or by pop bands. Kawai on the other hand, provides a more versatile tone and is more suitable for home use with its softer, deeper and more melodic tone
At Allegro Pianos, we much prefer working with Kawai pianos that feature Kawai's millennium III action and are found on most new Kawai Pianos.
We work only with some models of pre owned Yamaha pianos, and mostly the better series made by this manufacturer.
We do not actively buy Yamaha pianos although they are very prevalent in the market, but receive these routinely as trade ins.

What are 'Yamaha Grey Market Pianos'?
These Yamaha pianos were sold originally in various Asian countries and then repurchased and imported to the US as used pianos. Yamaha does not always sell parts for such pianos. There are arguments regarding the validity and motivations for such a policy but regardless of the point of view, Allegro Pianos rarely works with grey market pianos or with any Yamaha pianos that are older than 20 - 25 years of age and almost all Yamaha pianos offered for sale at Allegro Pianos were made for the American market. We receive used Yamaha pianos from customers who choose to upgrade from their previous pianos - often after only a few years, to one of the many new or used higher quality piano brands offered for sale at Allegro Pianos. Trade in Yamaha pianos are carefully inspected, prepared and then offered for sale at substantial discounts over newer Yamaha pianos and at much lower prices than typical new pianos sold for in the greater NYC area. Allegro Pianos offers great warranty and service for used Yamaha Pianos. |
